الشرح المختصر
"Ghareeb al-Qur’an" (unfamiliar words of the Qur’an) refers to every word, whether that be a noun, a verb, or a particle, that is in need of clarification, regardless of whether or not the word's meaning is vague. Commonly known words like earth, heaven, water, etc. are not included, as they do not require clarification. These words are called "ghareeb" (odd/strange) as they are unfamiliar to most of people, as opposed to the other, clear words. The reason why these words are considered "ghareeb" could be their rare use, being from a different dialect or accent, limited knowledge of the reader or the listener about the Arabic langue, etc. "Ghareeb al-Qur’an" is a branch of the science known as "ma‘āni-l-Qur’an" (meanings of the Qur’an), as the latter provides explanation of the Qur’anic words firstly, and then offers the respective interpretation of verses while taking into consideration the Arabic style in which the Qur’an was revealed.
