المعنى الاصطلاحي
A set of surahs of the Qur’an starting with Sūrat al-Baqarah and ending with either Sūrat Yunus or Sūrat-ut-Tawbah and Sūrat al-Anfāl (together).
الشرح المختصر
"As-Sab‘-ut-Tiwāl" (the seven long surahs): The Qur’an is divided into four sections: "As-Sab‘-ut-Tiwāl", "Al-Mi’een" (the one-hundred-verse surahs), "Al-Mathāni" (the surahs between "Al-Mi’een" and "Al-Mufassal"), and "Al-Mufassal" (the surahs starting from Sūrat Qāf to the end of the Qur’an). "As-Sab‘-ut-Tiwāl" is a name given to a set of surahs of the Qur’an arranged in the "mus'haf" (physical copy of the Qur’an) in the following order: Al-Baqarah, Āl ‘Imrān, An-Nisā, Al-Mā’idah, Al-An‘ām, Al-A‘rāf, and the seventh one consists of Al-Anfāl and At-Tawbah together, which were considered one surah because they are not separated by the "basmalah" ("Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem" [in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful]). It is also said that the seventh surah is Sūrat Yunus. These surahs are named "At-Tiwāl" because they are longer than the rest of the surahs of the Qur’an.
