المعنى الاصطلاحي

Water that falls off the parts of the body during ritual purification.

الشرح المختصر

"Maa musta`mal" (used water) is the water that falls off the parts of the body of the person performing ablution or "ghusl" (ritual shower). When the water runs over the parts of the body and falls off them and then gathers in a place, that collected water is "maa musta`mal". It has three states: 1. Water used to purify from major or minor impurity. 2. Water not used to purify from ritual impurity but rather for recommended purification, such as renewing the ablution or taking a bath for the second or third time. 3. Water neither used for purification from impurity nor for recommended purification; rather, it is used to cool off or the like.
