المعنى الاصطلاحي

Selling money for money, whether they are of the same type and description or are different.

الشرح المختصر

"Sirāfah" (currency exchange) means selling gold and silver in exchange for gold and silver, whether they are minted into coins or not, or one is minted and the other is not. The Māliki scholars defined it as: selling currency for a different type of currency, such as selling gold for silver. As for selling currency of the same type, if it is sold by weight, then it is called "murātalah", and if it is sold by the number of coins, then it is called "mubādalah".

التعريف اللغوي المختصر

"Sirāfah": exchanging one currency for another. Derived from "sarf", which means returning.
