The last night of the (lunar) month.
الشرح المختصر
The scholars have three opinions about what is meant by “sirār”: 1. The majority opinion of the scholars of Arabic language, Prophetic traditions, and its terminology is that it is the end of the month, due to the “istisrār al-qamar” (the hiding or disappearance of the moon). 2. Some have said that it is the middle of the month and the proof that supports this opinion is the recommended supererogatory fasting for three days in the middle of the month when the moon is full. 3. It has also been said that it is the beginning of the month.
التعريف اللغوي المختصر
"As-Sirār": the last night of the (lunar) month, and it may refer to the last two nights. Original meaning: disappearance; in reference to the disappearance of the moon (from the sky at the end of the lunar month).
